5 Tips to Conserve Water

by Indira
(Delhi, India)

5 tips to conserving water in your home:

1. Turn the water off while you brush your teeth. The average person uses one gallon of water while they brush. You can reduce this to mere ounces if you cut it off while you are scrubbing.

2. Use a rain barrel. It is illegal to water your lawn using a hose or sprinkler during drought in some places. It is better to keep a rain barrel and use that water to refresh your lawn until the rain starts up again.

3. Take a shower instead of a tub bath. Most people use about 50 gallons of water in the tub. Statistics show that on average, a shower puts out about 2 gallons per minute which is about 40 gallons for 20 minutes of showering. You can reduce this amount even more if you turn the water off while you shave, shampoo and lather.

4. Wash your dishes by hand. The average dishwasher takes up about 20 gallons per load, while the human hand only uses about 5 gallons per load.

5. Supervise young children while they are using water. Most kids like to play in the water and will use two or three times the amount that an adult will use. If you monitor them, and tell them when to cut it off, then you are sure to keep the numbers down on your meter.
