A Few Small Steps Made a Difference

by Adam
(Grand Rapids, MI)

Over the last few years, I have noticed my energy bill climbing higher while not changing any of our usage habits. In order to try to save some money, we made a few small changes around the house that are making a difference.

The first obvious change was to change our lightbulbs to a lower wattage energy saving brand. We don't see any difference in the brightness of our home, but we are seeing money come off our bill. The next change had a bigger impact.

Through the colder months, we protected against drafts by using plastic shrink wrap on all of our windows. This is not only saving on electricity, but also gas.

The last thing we did was to install timers on some of the things we forget to turn off like the television and kitchen lights. The difference wasn't dramatic, but we are seeing about a fifteen to twenty dollar decrease in our bill depending on the season.
