Hand Me Down and Homemade Halloween Costumes
by Ginette
One was by using hand-me-down costumes. My children have been used to using hand-me-down clothing since they were born. We regularly buy clothing at garage sales and at Goodwill. We love getting clothing and costumes from cousins and neighbors. So, they do not envy their friends with new store-bought costumes, because we have taught them this. The second way was by making homemade costumes. My four-year-old doesn't know yet to want specific costumes, so I gave him ideas with lots of enthusiasm like ghosts, or mummies, that we could make with fabric. He chose to be a mummy and I cut up lots of white flannel I had and sewed the strips together end-to-end until I had enough to wrap around his body, arms, and legs. We bought cheap Wet-N-Wild makeup rather than expensive Halloween makeup for their faces. My seven-year-old son chose to use the same costume for three years straight, so he made it easy for me to save on his costume! We just focus on the fun and the meaning of the holiday and our kids don't expect lots of store-bought stuff.
