Make Your Own Christmas Presents, Pick Names, and Have a Potluck

by Meg E

With the recession, there has been an increased interest in saving money and living frugally. The holidays are a time during which this comes to the forefront, since they usually involve unusual expenditures.

Here are some ideas on how to save money on presents and food during holiday celebrations:

• If you have a large family, institute a method of giving so that all of the members don’t have to give to every other member – if you have a group of 30 and everyone needs present, that’s a lot of time and money!

In my family, all of the children still in school receive a present from each couple or family. Once the children reach college, they become part of the adult group. All of the adults are assigned names, and all of the names are assigned. You only buy gifts for someone whose name you were assigned. For instance, David was assigned Mary and Joe. He buys presents for them and any children, but no one else. In turn, he receives a presents from Susie and from Joyce.

• Make your own presents. Many hobbies lend themselves to creating personalized presents for not much money. They may take a little more time, but since you would be doing the hobby anyway it is usually very little effort.

Examples include making scrapbooks, knitting or crocheting sweaters and scarves, whittling decorations, letter openers, etc., sewing clothes, taking pictures, and more. Use your imagination!

• Have a potluck. Invite each of your guests to bring a dish; coordinate it so you don’t end up with 3 green bean casseroles. The guests feel good that they have helped out, and you save time, money and effort from not having to make all of the food.
