How To Save Energy At Home This Winter

Energy Efficient House | Lower Cost of Heating

Most of us want to save energy at home this winter. Scroll down the page for tips and ideas from fellow readers as they tell us how they lower their cost of heating in winter.

Ideas for a lower winter heating bill:

  • Insulate your windows using weather stripping, plastic, and thermal curtains.
  • Turn your thermostat down a few degrees and layer with sweaters and thermal underwear.
  • Keep your duct vents and furnace filters clean. Have your furnace serviced every fall.
  • Close all drapes at night and open rooms to the sun during the day.
  • If you're upgrading, buy a high efficiency furnace, and energy efficient heaters.
  • Invest in storm doors and windows if you don't already have them.
  • Make sure your walls and attic space are well insulated.

Taking small steps (and larger upgrades, when you can afford them) can significantly lower your winter heating bill, without you feeling the chill.
