Thrift Store Ties

Just a fraction of my thrift store tie collection

Just a fraction of my thrift store tie collection

I've always be fascinated by retro culture and fashion. Specifically from the mid 1950s to the mid 1960s. When the TV show "Mad Men" hit the air it a couple of years ago seemed like it was made just for me. That inspired me to start collecting vintage neckties. Since I'm required to wear a tie everyday at work I figured I might as well make a statement.

About 2 or 3 times a month I hit the 6 or 7 thrift stores in my area and rifle through the tie selection. Sometimes is it really hit-or-miss but I've also found some awesome ties. It does take some time of course. I have to check each tie for damage, stains, etc. It's almost heartbreaking when I find a cool, narrow tie that is unwearable. But when I do find a great tie that I can wear it is a total rush!

Typically the stores I frequent charge anywhere from $1.25 to $2.00 per tie. I've search a lot of online vintage stores and they want anywhere from $10 to $50 for some of the same neckwear I've purchase.

Sure some of the ties I find and wear are a bit out of style but I constantly get compliments about them. And they also serve as an ice-breaker and/or conversation piece.
