Warming up a Rental Home

by Harry
(Kings Langley, UK)

We used to live in rental homes that were built during the 30's and 40's with little or no insulation.

I would use the plastic window sealer kits on all of our windows. You would fit them loose with double sided tape and use a hair dryer to shrink the plastic up tight.

On the very leaky windows on the north side of the house I would also duct tape up some plastic drop cloths. You could see the plastic bow out into the rooms when the wind was blowing, but it stayed a lot warmer in the house after I did this.

Most of these old homes had 12-14 foot high ceilings. So we installed fans and turned them on low too help get the warm air back down to the floor level.

We would also use elec. blankets on the beds and living room when we were watching TV.
