Water Saving Ideas

A major reason for wasted water is a leaking toilet because it's so hard to detect. One way to check is to remove the toilet tank top and see if the water is high enough to dribble into the overflow pipe. If it is, then adjust the water level lower using the float mechanism. Some people have put a brick or a bag of marbles into the toilet tank to reduce the overall amount of water for each flush.
An instant way to reduce water usage is to install a 2 gallon per minute shower nozzle in your bathroom. Most common shower heads are using much more than this and the cost for such an item is low.
Some communities are enforcing a hosepipe/sprinkler ban for outdoor gardens, so, how do you keep your garden watered during such periods?
One way is to make use of your air conditioner condensation. Plant your garden in the direct path of where the water comes dripping from your air conditioner. Another way is to use a rain barrel to catch water when it comes out of your downspout from the guttering around your house.
The way that you use water for household chores can save some water. For example, washing dishes by hand uses less water than an automatic dishwasher does. Also, showering uses less water than a tub bath.
