Windows are the Biggest Heat Drains - Insulate and Use Thermal Curtains
by Bob
A few very simple solutions can help retain heat and save money on your heating bills. Just as you might open windows in warm weather to circulate air through your house, keeping them shut tight in the winter is your first step. Be sure your windows have a tight seal. If not, there are kits available at most hardware stores and many of the big discounters (Target, WalMart, etc) that allow you to essentially shrink wrap your windows (using plastic sheets from the kit and the heat from a hair dryer) and seal off drafts. Alternately (or in addition to), keeping blinds and curtains closed will hold cold air against the windows and insulate your rooms. If you only have blinds or only curtains, consider installing the additional window treatments like thermal curtains/insulated drapes. They’re both attractive and functional, giving you options for keeping out the drafts. If you have the time and talent (or the budget), you can also make or buy insulated window coverings which add even more protective insulation.
